Polish Tango: Stefan Witas - Dziś jesteś przy mnie, 1937

Stefan Witas & Orkiestra Odeon (dir. by Jerzy Gert?) - Dziś jesteś przy mnie (Today You Are By Me...) Tango (Berlines /Jerry) Odeon c. 1937 (Polish) NOTE: Stefan Witas belonged to the Great Five of crooners in prewar Poland: including Mieczysław Fogg, Adam Aston, Tadeusz Faliszewski and Janusz Popławski. Witas was the youngest among them: he started his career in the beginning of the 1930s and after winning the radio-contest, he achieved great popularity. What’s interesting, all of those singers had gone through a solid operatic singing education before they chose to perform in the music shows or in revelers groups. Witas was not exception, and - like the remaining four - his legacy included not only popular tangoes or foxtrots but also quite a few good recordings in the operatic repertoire. This tango has never been any kind of a big hit in Poland, however it is nice to listen to especially, with that excellent tango-orchestration by (probably?) Polish bandleader Jerzy Gert (who was in that time, the musical director in the Polish Odeon).
