Our camp leader was a young woman with pinkish-blonde hair and green eyes named Nene. She was the very enthusiastic and excitable sort. She knew a lot about the outdoors, bugs in particular. A week in and we all went on our first excursion. There would be light hiking and, if all went well, we’d be back in a few hours. Things did not go well. It was me, my friend Shuba, so named because of the weird sound she habitually made in moments of false superiority, a kid we all called ‘The Captain’ because she swore she was seventeen year old pirate (she looked a lot older to me), and one other kid none of us knew that well who insisted she be referred to as ‘The Elite’. And, of course, Camp Leader Nene at our hea
