Various of destroyed streets and buildings, people walking through rubble STORYLINE: Huge swathes of the downtown area in war-ravaged Gaza City have been heavily damaged during the Israel-Hamas war, leaving many streets completely unrecognisable. The vast majority of buildings near the central Palestine Square neighbourhood have been either significantly damaged or completely levelled, with debris scattered in the streets. Central Gaza City has been one of the epicentres of the fighting between Israel and Hamas. It was one of the first locations Israeli forces targeted after they began their ground incursion of the territory. More than 22,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed by Israeli fire and airstrikes since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out, the Hamas-run Health Ministry say. The war erupted on Oct. 7 when militants linked with Hamas, and other armed Palestinian groups, stormed southern Israel and killed 1, 200 people, mostly Israelis, and abducted 240 others.
