Spirits (2022)

Preserving Mexico’s mezcal traditions with a new generation of female mezcaleras Refugia Cortes Ramos, (born 1992) represents a new generation of maestras mezcaleras, who are dedicated to traditions and crafts. This new generation of female producers recognizes and designates themselves as masters and leaders in the mezcal production sites. Returning to his Oaxacan roots Zurich-based director Chris Santiago tells us about Mexico and its history with Mezcal, “Due to its open borders during the pandemic, Mexico touched many people for the first time. Its culture, traditions, and gastronomy opened a new world for those who were looking, especially when talking about Spirits.” “Mezcal, once considered a poor man’s drink, is now a trendy spirit, but as with everything, there are also downsides. Mainstream tourism and industrialization threaten to permanently change the lovingly preserved crafts and customs. The demand of the West is gigantic, but without the consumer being aware that, for example, certain agaves need up to 25 years to be harvested. Mezcal is more than just liquor, it is a craft, tradition, and cultural asset that must be preserved.” August 10, 2022
