In the Ashtanga Yoga tradition it is required to hold the ankles in Laghuvajrasana instead of the knees. This requires much more strength than if you hold the knees of the back of the knees. By decreasing the amount of extension of the spine the pelvis, core and legs are trained to hold the body off the ground. Practicing laghuvajrasana in this way assists the student in developing the muscular support for deeper backbends.
