The President attended, via videoconference, the ceremony to launch the Chukotka nuclear-powered icebreaker
Commissioned by Rosatom State Corporation and built by the Baltic Shipyard, Chukotka is the fifth Project 22220 icebreaker. Boasting a displacement of over 33,000 tonnes, she can break through the ice of up to 3 metres thick. The ship will shortly undergo outfitting and trial navigation. Apart from Chukotka, the Baltic Shipyard is building two more icebreakers of the same series, namely Leningrad and Stalingrad.
Project 22220 icebreakers are considered to be the largest and most powerful icebreakers in the world. Their main task is ensuring year-round navigation in the Arctic.
