The Last Photos Taken Before Being Captured by the Taliban
British photojournalist Sean Smith talks to us about his work on the front line covering conflicts in the Middle East. He first arrived in Iraq in 2003, when Saddam Hussein was still in power, and was present during the bombing of Baghdad. He talks us through a haunting image he took – depicting suspected insurgents being ominously taken for questioning by US marines, blindfolded and walking in single file – during Operation Steel Curtain.
He also tells us about time he spent with the platoon of US Army sergeant Bowe Bergdahl in Afghanistan in 2009. In an incident still shrouded in mystery, Bergdahl walked away from his posting and was subsequently captured by the Taliban. He wasn’t released until 2014 – half a decade later.
