These days, over 50 vessels carrying everything, from essential oil products to finished goods, pass through the Egyptian waterway each day. On March 24, 2021, the canal came under the spotlight after a 400-metre (1,310ft), ship ran aground, halting all maritime traffic possibly for weeks to come.
