Israeli police forcibly remove ultra-Orthodox protesters opposing new draft law
Ultra-Orthodox protesters blocked a road in Jerusalem during a demonstration against a potential new draft law which could end their exemptions from military service. The service is compulsory for Jewish men and women, but politically powerful ultra-Orthodox parties have won exemptions to allow members of their communities to study full-time in religious seminaries. The exemptions have prompted widespread anger and resentment from the secular majority, especially as the army recently announced that compulsory service may be extended, and reserve duty will be more frequent.
