The PPD (short for Pistolet-Pulemyot Degtyaryova, “Degtyaryov machine pistol“) is a submachine gun designed in the Soviet Union in 1934 by Vasily Degtyaryov.
The PPD was designed to chamber the then new Soviet ×25mm Tokarev pistol cartridge, which was based on the ×25mm Mauser cartridge used in the German Mauser C96 pistol. The later PPD models utilized a 71-round detachable drum magazine instead of the previous 25-round magazine.
The PPD was inspired by the Bergmann-Schmeisser MP28 submachine gun. All versions of the PPD (PPD-34, PPD-34/38, PPD-40) were blowback operated with an open bolt-design capable of selective fire and a wooden stock.
The PPD officially went into military service with the Red Army in 1935 as the PPD-34 and was used during World War II. It was officially replaced by the PPSh-41 by the end of 1941.
