Mike Tyson gets pushed into the middle rounds for the first time in his career against journeyman Mike Jameson. More info below...
Mike Jameson was a tough boxer, and although he had lost 9 fights by this point in time of his career he had only been stopped twice, once by Tony Fulilangi in 1982 and the other against Frank Bruno in 1983. Jameson had lost but gone the distance with other notable boxers of the time such as undefeated Scott Frank, Yaqui Lopez, Randall Cobb and Michael Dokes. Although Jameson had 14 wins, he hadn’t beaten anybody of note.
Tyson started off the year well with a 1st round TKO against David Jaco racking up his 16th win in total. To this point in time however nobody had taken Tyson past the 4th round. Tyson was suffering from bronchitis heading into the fight...
Jameson entered the match with Tyson holding a significant height, weight and reach advantages. Standing 6’4“ tall, weighing 236lbs and having a 79“ reach, Jameson was a giant compared to the 5’10“, 215lb Mike Tyson. Jameson spent most of the fight clinching and retreating from Tyson throwing only the occasional punch. Tyson did well to stalk his opponent around the ring forcing the pace however he had no answer to the repeated clinching of Jameson. In round 2 Tyson opened a cut above Jameson’s left eye which caused Jameson to retreat even more than he had been, focusing on surviving more than winning. Round 3 was interesting in the fact it was only 2 minutes long and Tyson was warned for a low blow. In round 4 Jameson was warned for clinching and a possible intentional headbutt, immediately following the warning Tyson pounced on Jameson putting him down with a flurry of punches. Somehow Jameson survived the round and took Tyson into the 5th round for the first time ever. Following a flurry of hooks early in round 5, Jameson went down for a 2nd time and although he got back to his feet, referee Joe Cortez surprisingly stopped the fight.
Mike Jameson remained active until 1992, losing all but 1 of his next 8 fights. He came very close to causing a couple upsets in 1987 when he knocked down Tony Tubbs during the final round of their fight, lost by split decision to Phillip Brown and then had a no contest declared in his bout with former World Heavyweight title challenger Jimmy Young. Jameson’s last fight was a majority decision win over 6 rounds against the practically unknown Berry Basler, in 1992.
Tyson was lined up to face veteran heavyweight James “Quick“ Tillis in May, widely considered to be Tyson’s first REAL challenge, however he still had a couple more victims to plow through before then...
