Portal “Still Alive“ ending credits on a real amber monochrome monitor

*Thanks for 28K views / 1400 likes* | Portal ending credits on vintage machine I saw that the Portal ending credits were designed to look like an old amber monochrome monitor. I had a amber (orange) phosphor MDA/HGC monitor sitting not far from me so my first thought was “I have to reproduce this on the real mono monitor“ I have an old 1986 Paradise Autoswitch EGA2 card that supports monochrome monitors and 80x43 mode so I plugged it into my 486 box and fired up Turbo C Luckily everything just fit in the 80x43 It took a lot of time and trial and error to get the timing even close to right. I know it is still a little off in parts. To make things worse, I have had constant hardlocks due to bugs in the soundblaster code (which I didn’t write since I don’t know anything of sound programming) After lots of tweaks I finally got it working reasonably well. I don’t have a decent camera so apologizes for the video quality The whole thing is driven by a 486DX-120 with 64 MB of RAM and DOS 6 I did loosely get inspired by 256byteram’s 8080 run but with some major differences. For one thing this plays the real sampled audio track through the soundblaster card. (Everything you hear is coming through the vintage system’s speakers) Also the display format closely matches the original including the credits. I don’t think I saw any other reproduction on youtube that shows the credits as well Source code download:
