Bach: Herr Christ, der ein’ge Gottes-Sohn, BWV 601 (West Point Cadet Chapel Organ)

West Point Organist Craig Williams plays the third chorale prelude from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orgelbüchlein, the early part of which is focused on the season of Advent. Translated “Lord Christ, the only Son of God,“ this popular Lutheran hymn focuses on the expectation of Christ’s coming, not only as a Child but as Lord at the end of time. Like in many preludes from this collection, Bach picks a melodic fragment upon which to base the accompaniment and sets it against itself in the various voices of the accompaniment answering each other - both in the hands and the feet. The hymn tune in the soprano is simply stated as the melody as it would appear in the hymnal, with a few passing tones. #pipeorgan #bach #orgelbüchlein #westpoint
