This rare storm - the worst in over 50 years - has wreaked havoc on the roads in the usually arid region. Residents were surprised to find that they were experiencing a white winter after a snowfall in the city. Some western areas were also affected. South African Meteorological Service forecaster Lulama Temat said the snow was caused by a very strong weather system that pushes cold air out of the South Atlantic. This caused freezing levels to reach land, turning the falling rain into snow. The combination of such strong weather systems was rather unusual.
