Mista Manne here with a quick video going through quite a few 666 and Gimisum Family tapes I have in my Memphis stash. Tried to get everything organized somewhat. I also have quite a few doubles not in the video as well as may others that are off hand. The track playing is “I Thought You Knew“ by Gangsta Boo & Crunchy Blac from “DJ Paul & Juicy J Pt. 3 Spring Mix ’95.“ Interested in hearing a specific tape, jus let me know in the comments. Some tapes are not shown in the video such as Juicy’s Chronicles of the Juice Manne, some more MC Mack tapes, and the other Lady Bee tapes.
Back in 1993, Paul & Juice were just two separate kats out of many small time mixers struggling to gain noise and reputation from the Memphis streets. DJ Paul from Blackhaven was an at-home mixer who gained notoriety through his back to back neighborhood mixtapes. Like so many other mixtapes circling the Memphis underground, they mainly featured remixed classic westcoast tracks. He soon began producing himself & for his brother Lord Infamous in 1992. Together they formed the duo “The Serial Killaz.“ At the time, they ran by the aliases ’The Killaman’ and ’Scarecrow.’ Shortly after their first tape release, DJ Paul moved more towards producing tracks rather than remixing. In the process, he became affiliated with higher profiled artists such as the upcoming Skinny Pimp & 211 for example. He began to easily attract many underground MCs onto his beats and before long, his mixtapes were featuring numerous rappers from all around the way. DJ Juicy J on the other hand, was also an in-house mixer. Coming up from the Northside, he too started off mixing and later moved more towards producing beats. He had gained himself a name for his humorous lyrics, upbeat mixes, and crazy interludes on his own set of mixtapes. From the getgo, Juicy “Lowdown“ J was already looking to form his own click. He quickly affiliated himself with local MCs and counterparts in the area. These included his brother Project Pat, D-Magic, Nigga 9, & Lyrical Dope just to name a few of the first. After his Vol. 6 dropped, Juicy set out to meet Paul realizing the two shared similar interests. They immediately hooked it and started working on beats & right off the bat it was up & up from there on out. Paul brought in his crew and Juicy brought in his folks. Originally the whole set up was just labeled the “Backyard Posse“ and DJ Paul and Juicy J continued working on tracks for their mixtapes. This Vol. 1 tape was the result of putting both sides of the table together for the first time. There were many folks affiliated with the “Backyard“ click of 1993. Just to name a few of what I can: D-Magic, MC Wicked, Skinny Pimp, 211, Homicyde, Lyrical Dope, Big Syl, Lil Ced, Nigga 9, Lil Buc, Lil E, Lil Glock, ., Gangsta Blac, Peaches, Queen Tanneisha, Kay-9, the ., Mac Nard, Lil Ric, Lil J, Mac A, Hot Rod, Lil Larry, Project Pat, Lord Infamous and theres obviously some more. During the click up, Juicy J dropped his #7 alongside Paul droppping his #14 and the Backyard Posse was thick on the stereo. After the big feedback & turnaround from the Vol. 1 tape, paired with the fame of their respective mixtapes, the idea to form a organized click with a clean slate & a new name came up. The name Triple Six Mafia (which was coined by Lord Infamous) was chosen to fit the title and the whole crew was soon connected by that callsign. Both DJ Paul & Juicy J immediately started working on getting things together for the rest of the year and on to the next. Already folks like Koopsta Knicca, Lil Fly, and Gangsta Blac were coming thru regularly to lace up the tracks. Backyard Posse to Triple Six Mafia from the ’93
