In 1961 Nabokov made his operatic début by winning the Reggio Emilia International Opera Competition, basso division, singing the role of Colline in La bohème (which was also the début of his fellow cast member Luciano Pavarotti as Rodolfo; Pavarotti won the tenor competition).
