MTA retires New York City R32 Subway Car

Today was one of the first of the last run for the New York City R32 Subway car. These cars were manufactured by the Budd Company in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, making its debut in the New York City transit system in 1964. These cars originally came with blue doors, multicoloured tiles, marker lights and a roll destination sign. They had a life expectancy of 35 years but outlasted some of the other cars with an outstanding 58 years of service. The total number of 600 were built and 400 where scrapped in 2009. Two of the trains have been preserved for New York Transit Museum. The 400 that was scrapped in 2009 serve as artificial reefs and were sunk into the Atlantic Ocean. The scrap was halted due to structural integrity of another fleet known as the R44. Video by HG (FNTV )
