Icons are very much part of life in Russia. You come across them in every church in Russia, and every big art museum has a collection. Then there are legendary icon painters like Andrei Rublev, about whom a cult movie exists by Tarkovsky. After a while one comes to appreciate Russian icons are very different from any other picture in the way they are made and the way we look at them.
