This fiery, passionate Russian romantic folk song, much-beloved both in Russia and around the world, has some surprisingly multicultural roots. The lyrics are by the Ukrainian poet Yevgeniy Pavlovich Grebyonka (1812-1848), the music, though Russian-flavored, by a German-born composer Florian Hermann.
