A tribute to one of the hardest hitting welterweight champions in history, José Isidro “Pipino“ Cuevas González better known as Pipino Cuevas.
In 1971, Cuevas at only 14 years of age made his professional boxing debut in Mexico City, losing by second round TKO. He continues to pile up a mix of losses and wins for the next 3 years. 3 months before he turned 18, he won the Mexican Welterweight title by stopping Jose Palacios in 10 rounds.
In 1976, Cuevas won the WBA World Welterweight title by knocking out Ángel “Cholo” Espada in the second round. With this victory, Cuevas became the youngest welterweight champion in history, at 18 years of age. From that year till 1980, he piled up a streak of 11 wins, 10 knockouts, making 11 successful title defenses.
Notable successful title defenses include a rematch and rubber match against Angel Espada (x2), Pete Ranzany, Randy Shields, Billy Backus, Clyde Gray, Harold Weston, Shoji Tsujimoto and perhaps his best victory against Argentinean Miguel Angel Campanino. In his 11 successful title defenses, only the extremely durable Randy Shields made it to the final bell.
Cuevas title reign ended in 1980, when he was knocked out by a young Tommy Hearns in Hearns’ hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Since then, Cuevas have started to decline and lost most of his big fights, notably against Roberto Duran in 1983.
Although Cuevas is mostly remembered for his defeat to Thomas Hearns, Cuevas’ achievements as a welterweight champion was great yet often overlooked. Cuevas had faced the best opposition available to him during his 4 year reign as champion, and fought 11 title defenses during the period before running into future legend, Tommy Hearns.
Cuevas retired with a final record of 35 wins, 31 knockouts and 15 losses. The Ring listed Cuevas as the 31st greatest punchers of all time in their list of 100 Greatest Punchers of All Time.
