From Fayetteville promoter Ira Schwartzman: Chester’s Place was a club that both friend and co-promoter Harold Wieties and I frequented. Both of us had “day jobs” but we would occasionally promote a show at Chester’s Place. The owners of Chester’s would let us book music that we liked, so it was a good way for us to bring bands that we were fond of to Fayetteville. We saw Zero in San Francisco in the early nineties, and for several years I would contact the guy who was sort of managing them to see if they were traveling anywhere close to us. At the time, they played the west coast and would sometimes play the east coast, but they did not tour. When Robert Hunter got involved and they added Judge on vocals, they got some money for promotion and they decided to branch out to some new markets. They agreed to come to Fayetteville and they played Friday and Saturday, including the Friday night Happy Hour set. Somehow we got the word out that folks NEEDED to see this band and that these shows were not to be missed. Both nights sold out, and both the fans and the band were kind of blown away and, as they say, the rest is history. Kimock always loved playing Chester’s, and the Chester’s / Kimock shows became a real happening for both Kimock and his various bands and for Kimock’s fans from all over the country. Chester’s closed in 2003, but not before a final Steve Kimock and Friends run on 9-11 thru 9-13-2003. The final show is here on YouTube.
