’Celadon Incense Burner with Openwork Auspicious - character Design Lid’ - Park Byung-Ho.
About the ’inlay technique’ - The Inlay technique for metal was developed before the Goryeo Dynasty (474 years from 918 to 1392, the old name for Korea).
In sculpture and decorative arts of metal, bronze, etc., it is a technique of inserting contrasting materials into recesses of the base material to form a pattern or picture on a mainly flat surface.
A representative work of the famous metal engraving technique from the Goryeo Dynasty in Korea is the ’Heungwangsa Myeong Bronze Silver Inlaid Hyangwan’, which is on display at the National Museum of Korea.
It is a technique to create patterns by inserting different colored substances. This silver thread decoration technique was later applied to pottery techniques and developed greatly.
As this method has developed into ceramics, it has been used as a term to refer to this method.
In Korea, patterns on celadons using inlay techniques began to appear in the first half of the 12th century during the Goryeo Dynasty, and from the mid-12th century, the number of celadons with patterns using sophisticated inlay techniques increased significantly.
Regarding the Master Craftsman - Park Byeong-ho, the master pottery craftsman of the Republic of Korea, has a special career that led him to pursue a career in pottery after graduating from university. After starting his ceramics career in 1987, he learned the basics of ceramics while enduring a lot of pain for six years. The pottery master overcame extreme loneliness and the unfamiliar environment of pottery production during the six years he spent learning the basics of pottery after first entering the pottery industry.
He carried two packed lunches, something that anyone who has experienced the famously fierce college entrance exam in Korea can relate to, and learned the basics of pottery making just like a college entrance exam student.
Master pottery master Park Byeong-ho has been learning the basic skills of ’potter’s wheel forming’ and other pottery production for about six years since 1987.
Also, during that period, he learned about many traditional Korean pottery production techniques. While testing various techniques himself, he came to realize about ’Goryeo celadon’ rather than ’Joseon white porcelain’ or ’Buncheong ware’, and decided to pursue his life’s path through ’Celadon’. He decided to make pottery.
He opened a new studio and home in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, and has produced his own ceramics since 2005. Afterward, he devoted himself exclusively to ’Goryeo celadon’ pottery for a long time.
In 2023, he officially became a ‘Korean pottery master’.
In the video, a master craftsman is making ’Goryeo celadon openwork cloisonne incense burner pottery’, a treasure from the old Goryeo period in Korea, using a secret method.
Various other stories from the life of a master craftsman can be found in the video.
