Soviet emblem cut from Ukraine’s Motherland Monument on historic day

Ukraine’s capital Kyiv is getting ready to say goodbye the country’s most prominent remnant of the Soviet past, a huge Hammer and Sickle emblazoned on a shield held by a huge statue towering over the city. Industrial climbers working on Sunday (July 30) on top of the 62-metre Motherland statue, Europe’s highest, cut off and brought to the ground one of the two wreaths of emmer wheat featuring above hammer and sickle. The traditional Soviet emblem will be replaced by a tryzub (trident) a three pronged emblem of Ukraine that has been welded by metal workers in the Ukrainian capital. It will replace Hammer and Sickle in time for August 24, Ukraine’s Independence Day.
