RIPA Documentary: Construction of the church

A documentary relating to Ribe VikingeCenter’s docudrama series RIPA. In 2012 archaeological excavations revealed many Christian graves from the middle of the 800s, yet no trace of the early church which the archbishop Ansgar was given the permission to build around that time. The remains of the church are most likely hidden under the present Ribe Cathedral. Still, the size of the graveyard indicate that there was indeed a church and a Christian parish of several thousand people. These are the earliest traces of Christianity in present Denmark. A reconstruction of the Ansgar Church 860 AD has been made in Ribe Viking Centre and was consecrated in May 2018. It is possible to visit the church during the opening times of the Centre.
