BP Deepwater Horizon: Satellite Analysis of Oil Spill

Updated June 25, 2010. Oil has been leaking into the Gulf of Mexico since the BP Deepwater Horizon caught fire on April 20th, 2010, exploded, and sank. The subsequent oil loss is threatening the health of the Gulf and coastal ecosystems in the region. Since April 23rd, NOAA’s Satellite Analysis Branch has been using data from a variety of high resolution visible and synthetic aperture radar satellites from NOAA’s partners in Earth observations to document the latest extent of the surface oil.
