According to preliminary estimates by NASA Harvest, 5.2 to 6.9 million acres (2.1 to 2.8 million hectares) of farmland have been abandoned as a result of the war since it began. These abandoned fields make up 6.5 to 8.5% of the total acreage of Ukraine and, not surprisingly, are located along the front line of the war.
In addition, this year alone, Ukraine suffered about $2 billion in economic losses due to crop losses in what are now fallow fields, and these lost crops could have fed more than 25 million people for an entire year.
