Hasidic pilgrims arrived in the Ukrainian city of Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which is celebrated for two consecutive days on the new moon of the month of ’Tishrei’, according to the Jewish calendar.
Footage captured on Friday shows the Hasidim walking along the streets of Uman and dancing. The Head of the Cherkassy regional administration, Igor Taburets, posted on his Telegram channel on Thursday that about 22,000 Hasidic pilgrims arrived in Uman for the celebration.
Earlier, Taburets said that the city has a special regime for entry and exit, as well as movement during the celebration. Law enforcement officers are on heightened alert across nine security checkpoints. On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned his citizens that traveling to Uman over the Rosh Hashanah period was dangerous.
On August 20, the Ukrainian Embassy issued a statement stating Kiev may prohibit Hasidim from entering Uman if the deportation of Ukrainians from the country continues. Uman is an important pilgrimage site for Hasidic Jews, as it is the burial place of Rabbi Nachman of Breslav, the founder of the Breslav Hasidic movement.
