Video of Mars Ingenuity helicopter’s successful first flight on Red Planet
Nasa has made history in achieving the first powered, controlled flight on another planet in a feat expected to revolutionise space exploration.
The space agency said its $85m helicopter named Ingenuity had managed to ascend to around three metres above Mars, then hover for 30 seconds and rotate, and then descend.
It received images from Mars showing the helicopter in flight, as well as a picture from the helicopter itself.
It was deemed a “near impossible feat“, given the perilously thin atmosphere on the planet, with Nasa having said that “the laws of physics may say it’s near impossible to fly on Mars, but actually flying a heavier-than-air vehicle on the red planet is much harder than that“.
