This morning, there was low pressure and high temperature, with fog everywhere. We headed to see the owlets. Imagine our surprise when we found all three gathered in one spot, peacefully snoozing while waiting for breakfast. One of the owlets had already started molting into adult plumage, with a white-fringed mask, while the other two were still in their darker brown juvenile feathers. The owlets took turns napping, as if one was always on watch, but sometimes all three would fall asleep. They are surprisingly photogenic — huge eyes with yellow sclera and black round irises, and two small feathered ears that they amusingly perk up when they sense danger, looking like little devils. They have cat-like habits: they hunt and groom themselves, though they don’t play like cats. In short, owls are flying cats.
