PCRI’s Executive Director, Mark Scholz, MD, describes some of the differences between 3T and MRI machines as it concerns patient experience. He also describes the specific subset of people who should use the outdated machines and emphasizes the importance of having scans performed at a center of excellence with a large volume of prostate cancer patients.
:08 The biggest difference between the 3T and MRI scan is the patient experience. The MRI machines require an endorectal coil to achieve the same clarity as a 3T machine, and it is a large and uncomfortable device that is placed inside the rectum during the scan.
:53 MRI machines are better than 3T machines for men who have had hip replacements. However, for men without hip replacements, there is no reason to use anything other than the latest 3T machines, and the absence of one at a medical facility should call into question their commitment to taking the highest quality images.
1:34 Achieving quality MRI images and readings is a difficult process, and there are suggestions that a radiologist should have 1000 practice reads to be competent. Therefore, it is prudent to go to a center of excellence that sees a large volume of prostate cancer patients in order to ensure that you are receiving the best possible scans.
