Tiers:
Tier 1: I’M SCREAMING
This tier includes dancers who reliably force a poorly suppressed shriek from my vocal cords with their spectacular musicality and dynamic choices. Technique is no longer the focus for these dancers, and so they are able to really converse with the audience. Other than Ryusei, I would put Jumpei from Alaventa and Bailey Sok in this category, just to name a few.
Tier 2: let me take some notes real quick.
While these dancers might not be technically on par with the ones in the previous tier, there are some very impressive aspects to their technique and musicality, and I’ve spent time figuring out how to incorporate their strengths into my own dancing. These individuals show a maturity in their performance that the dancers in the tiers below don’t have yet.
Tier 3: giving me an A without the
The dancers in this category are consistent, and their technique is really solid, but their performance leaves me wanting something more, dynamically or otherwise.
Tier 4: she has her moments
These dancers have some noticeable gaps in their technique, but their potential is obvious in videos where the choreography particularly suits them.
Tier 5: employable, but it’s a scroll for me.
A lot of people who are unfamiliar with the dance world can only picture people like Bailey when they hear the term “professional”, but in reality, the dance industry offers a wide variety of jobs that allow for a range of ability just like any other field. The dancers here could ostensibly get professional jobs, but they wouldn’t have stood out enough for me to watch beyond the first couple seconds if they had popped up on my Instagram explore page before I knew who they were.
Tier 6: typical dance class vibes
These dancers would look at home in a dance class. They’re not so inexperienced that they can’t keep up, but they’re not skilled enough for most professional dance jobs either.
Tier 7: can sort of do the choreo
This is probably the closest thing I have to a “beginner“ tier. These dancers have relatively underdeveloped technique and struggle to move full out in open style choreography.
