Sang-woos mom, who separated with her husband at Sang-woos birth, visits her mothers house to leave Sang-woo for a while. Her recent hardship makes it difficult for her to earn enough money to raise him. Upon parting with his mother, he seems not to miss her much. Hes already become used to being left alone while his mom is busy managing the household. But, this mundane rural life is really boring for him, as there is nothing to play with. His grandmother has a hunched over back and no teeth left, not to mention being mute. He has neither friends nor playthings here, only a portable game machine and character postcards brought from Seoul. It is strange as well as dull for him to stay here with his ancient grandma.
