LABOURโ€™S 1945 VICTORY

โ†’ What must Labour do to win this time? Exactly 78 years ago today - on 27 July 1945 - newspaper headlines were ablaze with the news that Labour had won the general election by a landslide. Under leader Clement Attlee, the partyโ€™s radical and ambitious plans to rebuild a broken Britain after the Second World War strongly appealed to the electorate. Labourโ€™s achievements in the late 1940โ€™s included: โ–ช the creation of the modern welfare state and the National Health Service; โ–ช nationalisation of coal mining, steel industries, the railways, the Bank of England, civil aviation, electricity and gas; โ–ช the building of a million new homes, most of them council houses for low-income families. These sweeping reforms shaped Britain for the decades that followed. (Although it should be noted that William Beveridge, considered to be the architect of the Welfare State, was a Liberal). Without Labourโ€™s victory in 1945, Britain might never have got a National Health Service. This history shows us that radical high-cost policies can appeal to the nation and win, even when the country is short of money (as it was in 1945). Could Labour once again achieve a landslide victory by offering a new and exciting vision for the country? Britain today is again broken. We are impacted by a cost-of-living crisis, Brexit, Covid, a shattered NHS, corrupt Conservative rule, war in Ukraine, and the devastation of climate change. We need a new government with radical and ambitious plans to rebuild the country and put it back together. Can Labour offer us that for the next general election?
