Heavy snowfalls hit Russia causing chaos on the roads
Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world
A cold front caused heavy snowfalls that covered vast areas of Russia. The first snow of 2024 fell in Moscow and the Moscow region and there was a blizzard with wind gusts of up to 15 m/s. In addition to the capital region of Russia, the first snowfalls occurred in many parts of central Russia, as well as in Siberia and the Far East. Low temperatures and heavy precipitation caused ice to form on the roads, causing traffic chaos. In the Amur region, the highway leading to Yakutia was trapped in snow, which led to accidents, major traffic jams, and the closure of the road for heavy trucks. In the area of the village of Lapri, several trucks flew off the snow-covered road, one after another ending up on the side of the road. Continuous snowfall and ice formation made driving dangerous, forcing regional authorities to temporarily close the highway. The Ministry of Transport also urged car drivers to refrain from traveling in this area until weather conditions improve. According to meteorologists, snowfalls will stop soon and all the snow will melt. But the winter season in Russia has already begun fully and new snowfalls and permanent snow cover will be established in the very near future.
