85mm HIGH EXPLOSIVE vs PANTHER | T-34-85 vs Panther G | O-365K Armour Piercing Simulation

The simulation presents the detonation of an 85mm High-Explosive (HE) round on the bottom of the Panther G’s mantlet, with the blast hitting the thin roof armour. During WWII, some Panzers, including the Panther, suffered from brittle armour due to the chemical composition of the steel. That has been accounted for in the simulation, with the ductility of the medium hardness Rolled Homogenous Armour (RHA) plate being reduced; a standard 17mm RHA plate would not have cracked under this blast loading. Based on images of panthers destroyed by HE, the armour was sometimes even more brittle than the one in the simulation. Due to computational limitations, the Eulerian region in which the explosive/gas materials are simulated only extends slightly past the hull roof, meaning the pressure wave within the whole tank cannot be visualised. I doubt it would be pleasant to be underneath the detonation though. Amazing thumbnail artwork from: Gerhald3D
