Explore Gjellestad (fly through)

Explore Gjellestad - a fly through of the interactive story: The online visualisation is made by Viken County Council, Østfold University College, Institute for Energy Technology and Nordic Media Lab. In the autumn of 2018, archaeologists discovered a Viking ship at Gjellestad near Halden, Norway. A new ship burial from the Viking Age had been found. A clear and precise outline in georadar images was the start of a project that will provide new insight into Viking ships and the Viking Age. In 2019, archaeologists started excavating the ship. It had been 115 years since the last time a similar excavation had taken place. Only small areas were opened for excavation. Most of the ship grave still lies buried and unexplored. This summer the archaeologists at Museum of Cultural History (University of Oslo) will continue the excavations. Join the intriguing journey to Gjellestad and experience what the archaeologists have discovered so far.
