One of Iceland’s most loved holiday traditions dates to around the 17th century. Starting from the 12th of December, a Yule Lad – a character from Icelandic folklore – comes to town each night until Christmas Eve. Every night, children put a shoe in the window in the hopes of getting a gift from the visiting Yule Lad. Of course, it is important to be good so that the Yule Lad leaves a nice gift.
