Produced by Hearst Metrotone News, Inc. Hearst Metrotone News (renamed News of the Day in 1936) was a newsreel series (1914–1967) produced by the Hearst Corporation, founded by William Randolph Hearst. Screen News Digest was one of the last major newsreel series, it presented many topics consisting of current events or historical subjects. After Hearst discontinued their newsreel unit in 1967 (the same year that rival Universal Studios discontinued their long-running newsreel series), the producers of Screen News Digest relied on past stock footage from the Hearst Metrotone/News of the Day/Telenews library, in addition to new footage filmed by Hearst’s television news bureaus.
This 1970’s film describes the processes of the Franklin, Ohio Solid Waste Disposal and Fiber Recovery Plant.
The film commences with an opening shot (0:10) of Franklin, USA, a clean town. The camera then focuses on the welcoming sign of Franklin, Ohio (0:45), followed by the Franklin, Ohio Solid Waste Disposal and Fiber Recovery Plant (0:59). The audience is introduced to the Plant’s “Hydropumper“ chamber, which is used for waste management (1:45). The film showcases the Plant’s Junker, a bucket elevator employed for preliminary cleaning purposes (2:19).
Moving forward, the film shows the plants Revolving Drum (2:34), demonstrating its role in further cleansing the garbage. The magnetic conveyor belt and its process is then depicted (2:58 - 3:29), effectively separating Ferrous from non-Ferrous metals. Workers can be seen feeding scrap metal into the Open Hearth furnace at ArmCo (3:56), while steel is subsequently shaped, rolled, and stretched (4:40). Welders are captured molding the steel into rolls for automotive use (4:48).
Transitioning to the second most crucial process at the factory, the narrator begins explaining the processing of paper and cardboard (5:12). The film shows the entire procedure (5:35-6:00). The narrator highlights the Plant’s future plans to establish a sewage reclamation facility (6:16), which is presented as the Plant discharges its wastewater into the sewage facility (6:25). A sign indicating the Fiberclaim area is displayed (6:37), followed by a glimpse of the salvaged material from paper and cardboard (6:53). Gulf Poly-Eth crates are being loaded onto a Schneider freight truck (7:16).
Continuing with the narration, the third unit within the Plant is described as responsible for shredding discarded bottles and jars (8:02). The waste glass is subsequently transformed into cement blocks (8:27), The conversion of waste glass into Terrazzo (9:00). Another valuable application of recycled glass is showcased as it is used in the production of glass-wool insulation (9:58).
Any material that cannot be recycled undergoes combustion at a temperature of 115 degrees Fahrenheit (10:57). A Greyhound tour bus is then seen bringing tourists to the Plant (11:28),
