Visit Visit our website This brief film, a home movie shot by an unknown American amateur filmmaker, shows black and white footage of areas within the subtropical state of Florida as well as footage shot within the country of Iceland. To save money, the filmmaker repeated turned the camera on and off in some parts of the film, resulting in a sort of “burst“ effect that makes the film a bit hard to watch. The film opens with images of the balmy Florida coastline (:19) probably shot in the 1940s. A small dog splashes in pool water (:25). Flamingos typical of Florida are spotted (:45) as well as Seminole Indians or Native Americans (:47). A young boy wrestles an alligator by the water’s edge (:51). A dolphin show follows (1:12). Residents enjoy the water on the beach (1:30). The sun hangs high in the sky (3:00). A plane swings low over the water (3:18). A travelling family now appears on a ship deck circa 1930s, in thick winter clothes as they head for Iceland (3:28). A horse and carriage carry travelers (4:14). Youth nestle on the ground outside near a tent in a small village (4:27). Native Icelanders wear traditional attire (4:49). The camera moves over the children’s faces noting their features (5:01). Mountains run along the valley (5:08). The camera captures shots aboard the ship (5:43). Life boats hang off the edge of the cruiser liner (5:59). The film begins to conclude as a game of ball is played on the ship deck (6:16).
