Yamaha still make one FM chip, the YMF825 (. SD-1), which has some striking similarities to the OPL3 used in many PC soundcards in the 90s. I wondered if the SD-1 might be able to play OPL music, and if so, what it would sound like.
I built a USB interface and OPL to SD-1 translator, and tested it with various PC game and tracker music - here are the results.
