Umayyad Siege of Constantinople (Byzantine Empire)

The second Umayyad siege of Constantinople in 717–718 CE was a combined land and sea offensive by the Umayyad Caliphate against the capital city of the Roman Empire, Constantinople. The campaign marked the culmination of twenty years of attacks and progressive Arab occupation of the Roman borderlands, as Roman Empire plunged into prolonged internal turmoil. In 716, after years of preparations, Umayyads, led by Prince Maslama ibn Abd al-Malik, invaded Roman Asia Minor. Umayyads initially hoped to exploit Roman civil strife and made common cause with the Stratēgos Konon (later proclaimed as Emperor Leo III the Isaurian), who had risen up against usurper Emperor Theodosius III. Konon (Leo III), however, tricked Umayyads and secured the Roman throne for himself.
