In this video, Eric addresses this problem using an Elm bonsai. A very simple way to create a mini-bonsai is to take a cutting (Eric demonstrates using a Cotoneaster), stick it into a mame bonsai container, and get it to start to root. While the cutting can root, the problem with this method is that the tree is too little, and it will take a long time to form enough wood to become an interesting bonsai. A second method is to create small material (our example is a Cork Bark Elm variety) by placing a cutting from last year that has been wired already into a mame container. While this method produces bonsai that has have some interesting movement, since there’s almost no size to the trunk, it needs to be placed into a very small container, and that really increases the level of difficulty. A third method is using propagation techniques. Eric explains how he is working towards creating a sumo-style Elm mame bonsai using this method. This particular tree was actually part of the top of a more established bonsai.
