Padmanabhaswamy Temple, the Wealthiest Temple in the World with over $20 Billion Worth of Treasure
The Padmanabhaswamy Temple in India has approximately $20 Billion worth of gold and precious stones kept in six onsite vaults, and one of them is still unopened with its secrets kept inside.
The Padmanabhaswamy Temple was first built in the 6th century CE, and about ten centuries later, the shrine was further enhanced by the Kings of Travancore.
The Padmanabhaswamy Temple is located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.
The Padmanabhaswamy Temple is famous for the deeply respected and unique idol of Maha Vishnu, the god who is believed to be one of the most powerful divinities of Hinduism.
However, that is not the only thing the shrine is known for. Its popularity lies in the great mysteries surrounding the six vaults located within the temple.
In 2011, a petition was filed in the Indian Supreme Court by a retired IPS officer, Sundarajan, demanding that an official record of the temple’s treasury should be made.
The supreme court ordered a seven-member committee to look into the matter. The team found six vaults in the temple that were hidden until then, and they were named A, B, C, D, E, and F.
The iron doors of the vaults, which were closed for centuries, took a lot of effort to open. The five vaults that were finally opened revealed hidden treasure worth more than $20 billion.
According to confirmed reports, the treasure included:
A four-foot-high and three-foot-wide idol of Mahavishnu made of solid, pure gold. It’s decorated with diamonds and other precious stones.

A 1,800-lb reserve of gold coins dating to around 200 BCE, and more gold coins from different eras.

And much more...
According to an audit report submitted to the supreme court in 2015, at least 769 gold pots had gone missing since the discovery of the vaults.
Vault B, which is said to be profoundly connected to the god Padmanabhaswamy, couldn’t be opened despite all the struggles by the committee.
It is strongly believed by the temple’s ruling family, Vedic scholars, and Padmanabhaswamy’s priest that efforts to open Vault B could result in catastrophes.
According to a famous legend, efforts were made by invaders in the 1930s to steal the treasure of Vault B, but they were stopped by huge, poisonous snakes that had apparently come from nowhere.
There are two antechambers that lead to the main door of Vault B. The door is decorated with images of large serpents and deities which indicate that any efforts to open it may result in grave danger.
Some people believe that the vault houses a tunnel that directly links it to the Arabian Sea, and if the door is ever opened, the result will be devastating.
However, a team of experts led by Dr. Ajaykumar Verma has determined after their investigation that there is no possibility of such a tunnel existing within Vault B.
In a 2011 interview, the head of the Travancore royal family, Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma, had claimed that he knew what existed beyond the closed door of Vault B. However, he believed that it was not a necessity for everyone to know it. He passed away in 2012.
What do you think is the secret that lies within Vault B?
Is it just treasure or is it something more?
