Operation “Gomorrah“ was the first combined fire-bombing of a single German city by the RAF and American Air Force during World War II. From July 24 - August 3, 1943, round-the-clock air raids dropped about 9,000 tons of incendiary and explosive bombs on Hamburg’s harbor and residential districts. The result of the bombing was a Firestorm that produced gale-force winds and incinerated ten square miles of the city. In a single week, upwards of 40,000 people were killed, 250,000 homes destroyed, and 580 industrial and armaments factories were leveled.
