I was in need of a lathe for small parts (20mm Ø by 30mm, see link below) that I could relatively easily carry around. In addition I wanted it to be working just fine out of the box and not to be a project in itself.
The carrying around part and my requirement for it to be working out of the box excluded the usual Chinese suspects (to heavy, too much work to make it work). So I ended up with a PROXXON Precision Lathe PD 250/E made in Germany.
