Ksitigarbha in China is known by his Chinese name Di-Zang Pu Sa (地藏菩薩) & in Tibet by his Tibetan name Sa-E Nyingpo. He is a very popular Mahayana Buddhist Bodhisattva who is usually depicted as a monk holding a six rings staff “Ringed-Staff“ (called the Khakkhara) & red fire ball which is said to signify a jewel, Cintamani or “Wish-fulfilling Jewel“. The name Di-Zang is translated as the “Earth Treasury“ Ksitigarbha embodies the power of a vow to save sentient beings. Ksitigarbha belongs to the Vajra family. Ksitigarbha made a vow not to become a buddha until all living beings are saved. The hellish worlds are the special field of Kshytigarbha’s activities, since it is there that living beings suffer the most & need support. It is said that at the end of time Kshytigarbha will smash all hells into pieces, but for now he is the governor of Buddha Shakyamuni before the arrival of Buddha Maitreya. It is believed that the strength & accumulated merit of Ksitigarbha is unimaginable. Shakyamuni Buddha sets him as an example to other bodhisattvas, explaining that even having heard only the name Ksitigarbha, the most ingrained sinners purify the consequences of evil deeds. The main vows of the Ksitigarbha bodhisattva mantra is a wonderful tool for every practitioner. Just having the text of this mantra leads to unimaginable good karmic accumulations. the mantra, making offerings to His image, will never be born in bad areas of existence & become buddhas Ksitigarbha comprehended all the wonderful teachings of the buddhas, so he knows the most skilful methods & has incredible savings.
