In this video, we will show you , 7 Way To Identify Male Or Female Parrot Fish 1. ANAL & DORSAL FIN Large male parrot fish have pointed dorsal and anal fins, with female’s fins being rounder. While only female blood red parrot fins should be shorter and more rounded. Sometimes a few females will have pointed fins like a male. 2. COLORATION The only time when it is really very easy to pick out a male is when they are in their spawning colors. At the spawning time the males usually have brighter colors than females. 3. VENT SHAPE Females breeding tube will be blunt and fat. On the otherside males breeding tube will be skinny and pointing forward. Vent will be shaped like a “ U “ if female, “ V “ if male. 4. GROWTH RATE Males parrot grow faster and in females growth rate slower than males. 5. BREEDING BEHAVIOUR Even though most males are infertile,parrot cichlids exhibit normal breeding behavior. The male digs a flat spot and leads the female to it where she lays hundreds of eggs. The male swims over them, releasing milt as he tries to fertilize them. Females are able to successfully breed with fertile males from other related species like flowerhorn or texus fish. 6. BODY SHAPE In general females have fatter belly and more rounder in body shape. Males tend to be lighter than females. 7. EGG LAYING Females and males are virtually almost identical. The only sure fire way, is to have a group of them and see who lays eggs.
