That’s true! Instead of creating the sound, the parrot imitates it by using muscles in its throat to force airflow through the trachea (or windpipe) into an organ called the syrinx. They make different sounds, changing the depth and shape of the trachea. African gray parrots and Amazons aren’t the only birds that can learn to imitate sounds, including human speech.
