It was premiered on December 20, 1902 at Népszínház in Budapest, Hungary and is considered to be his first critical success. The libretto was written by Ferenc Martos and Károly Bakonyi. Robert Ilosfalvy was born in 1927 in Hódmezövásárhely (Hungary). He was a member of the National Opera of Budapest since 1954. Between 1955 and 1981 Ilosfalvy was under contract to the Cologne Opera in Germany. He had a wide international career. He sang in San Francisco, London, Brussels, Moscow, Munich, Wien, Berlin, and New York, among others. He was one of the greatest Hungarian opera talents of the post-war years, not only thanks to his bright voice but because of his high dramatic abilities.
