Jascha Spivakovsky: Chopin Ballade no.1 in g minor (rec Melbourne, 1966)
Jascha Spivakovsky (1896-1970) is a pianist who “fell under the radar“ of posterity, and richly deserves to be rediscovered. He was the older brother of violinist Nathan “Tossy“ Spivakovsky.
Jascha Spivakovsky was born at Smiela, near Kiev, in what is now Ukraine. As a child prodigy he studied at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatorium in Berlin under Professor Moritz Mayer-Mahr, a student of both Franz Liszt and Anton Rubinstein. Spivakovsky had a big career in Europe, as well as in his adopted country, Australia. He also played in the USA, debuting at Carnegie Hall in 1948.
